Introduction
2018 | Duration: 2 months
Goal: To create a moving app that will be competitive in the market. Previously this was designed and developed by a team of developers.
My Role: My job was to redesign the UI and add additional functionality. Key functionality includes ability to schedule a move, contact the mover, and track the mover during a move.
existing design
There were a few screens of the previous app provided to me before designing. After reviewing I could see that this project has a lot of potential. The company is clever to use "The Uber Concept" because of how popular the app is. New users to Truckable will already know how it should behave because of their experience using Uber. The old design, however, needed a makeover to match the new logo and colors provided.
Sketches
I started this project by sketching out my thoughts into a notebook. This was great for helping me take a creative approach to this project. This needed to be fresh and up to date but also fun. I sketched out some playful icons that could represent the three options customers have: Moving 1-2 items, small apartment or they can request to have items picked up at the store and delivrered to their home.
ui elements
I took the sketches and created UI elements like layout colors and iconography using Adobe Illustrator. I think the icons are playful and retro which is consistent with branding.
High fidelity wireframes
Due to the quick turnaround required for this project I went straight into high-fi wireframing using Sketch.
Demo
This is the customer's user flow for requesting a mover for 1-2 items. Selecting the left icon at the bottom will pull up the request form. Then they can fill out general information, and upload photos. The next page is to select the day and time to schedule the move or request it immediately. From there they enter in the location of the pickup and destination. Once that is filled out they will see a price estimate and be able to find a mover. The find mover icon will pulse until a mover has accepted this particular job.
Project Take-Aways
Before starting I was provided functional requirements from the developers of the original app. It was challenging but in a really fun way to project manage. I had to keep track of my progress and meet all of the requirements.
I had a really fun time designing the UI because I had a lot of freedom. Due to the relaxed laid-back feel I got from the branding I played a-lot with the voice of the app. I gave the app personality within the interactions.
